Product Description
Upgrade an existing electric roof window into a connected ventilation system without replacing the complete skylight assembly. This retrofit concept adds automation, climate sensing and remote control while preserving the original weather protection and operating safety functions.
Many homes already have electric skylights operated by wall switches or remotes. A smart retrofit package can add a compatible gateway, dry-contact relay interface, rain sensor, climate sensors and automation logic without changing the complete roof-window frame or glazing.
The retrofit approach is especially suitable for attic conversions, bathrooms, bedrooms, stairwells and renovation projects where the skylight structure remains in good condition but homeowners want app control, smart ventilation and connected shading.
| Product Type | Smart retrofit module for compatible electric skylights |
|---|---|
| Existing System Requirement | Electric actuator, original control box and functioning travel limit or safety system |
| Control Methods | Existing wall switch, remote control, smart gateway, mobile application or connected smart-home hub |
| Retrofit Interface | Manufacturer-approved gateway or dry contact / voltage-free relay input where compatible |
| Rain Sensor | Integrated, wired or compatible external sensor with automatic close priority |
| Climate Input | Temperature, humidity and optional CO₂ or indoor-air-quality sensor integration |
| Automation Modes | Humidity ventilation, night cooling, scheduled airing, away mode, rain close and shading coordination |
| Smart Home Compatibility | Project-specific gateway, protocol or hub compatibility to be confirmed before installation |
| Safety Requirement | Original limits, emergency controls, rain protection and obstruction functions remain active |
| Typical Application | Existing homes, lofts, bathrooms, bedrooms, stairwells and renovation projects |
The existing actuator and controller remain responsible for the skylight’s motion, opening limits and original safety functions. The retrofit system sends commands to the approved control input instead of switching the motor directly.
The gateway or relay module acts as a command layer. It can receive app requests, schedules or sensor data, then issue approved open and close commands while the original controller continues to manage travel and protection.
Rain and emergency safety logic should operate locally whenever possible, so automatic closure can still work even if Wi‑Fi, cloud services or remote access are unavailable.
- Review the existing skylight actuator, controller, switch and wiring diagram.
- Confirm available integration ports, voltage requirements and approved control method.
- Select gateway, relay, rain sensor, climate sensor and blind-control options.
- Prepare wiring harnesses, low-voltage control connections and mounting accessories.
- Install the module without bypassing original safety circuits or travel limits.
- Pair the smart controller with the selected hub, application or local network.
- Test rain close, emergency stop, manual control, automation rules and final sealing condition.
When humidity rises after showering, the skylight opens for a defined ventilation period. It closes after humidity falls below the chosen target or immediately when rain is detected.
When the attic temperature rises above the selected comfort limit, the system opens the skylight and raises connected shades if suitable outdoor conditions are available.
During warm weather, the skylight opens for a limited evening ventilation period, then closes before morning, rain or a selected outdoor weather threshold.
When the homeowner activates away mode, all connected skylights close and connected blinds move to the selected privacy or solar-control position.
- Inspect the existing skylight, roof flashing, actuator and controller before retrofit work.
- Confirm the control interface from the original wiring documentation.
- Use a qualified electrician for relay, power supply and control wiring.
- Install rain sensors where they receive actual weather exposure and can be serviced.
- Use interlocked control outputs so open and close commands cannot operate simultaneously.
- Document all wiring, relay channels, automation priorities and emergency procedures.
- Test rain closure before wet seasons and after any controller update.
- Inspect roof flashing, drainage channels and seals independently of the smart system.
- Check actuator movement, relay operation and local wall switch function regularly.
- Review automation schedules after seasonal changes.
- Replace batteries in wireless sensors and remotes as required.
- Retain manual emergency operating instructions near the local control point.
